Brown Statement on President Trump’s State of the Union Address

January 31, 2018
Press Release
Congressman Anthony G. Brown (MD-04) released the following statement after President Trump delivered his State of the Union address to a Joint Session of Congress

“I came to Congress to expand opportunity and prosperity for working families and to make our country stronger. I have sought to preserve American leadership in the world by guaranteeing our men and women in uniform have the resources to accomplish their mission and that we use all elements of our power – both diplomatic and military - to confront new and existing threats. I am committed to fixing our broken immigration system by strengthening security at the border, giving undocumented immigrants - including our DREAMers - an earned pathway to citizenship, and modernizing legal immigration to make it easier to reunify families. And I am determined to work on a bipartisan, 21st century infrastructure plan to rebuild our roads, bridges, transit, rail and ports to create jobs and grow the economy.

“For the last year, President Trump has displayed no leadership, demonstrated an unwillingness to compromise, contested known facts, corroded the national discourse, emboldened violent extremist voices, and pushed policies that favor the top 1%, big corporations and special interests. Today’s speech does not change anything.

“President Trump and Republicans now have a choice: work with Democrats to push forward the shared priorities of the American people, or continue with the dysfunctional business-as-usual that is guaranteed to leave more families behind and weaken our country.”
