President Trump Is Provoking An Arms Race And Jeopardizing America’s National Security
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Anthony G. Brown (MD-04) released the following statement on the President’s decision to withdraw the U.S. from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty on Saturday, and National security Advisor John Bolton’s statements rebuffing international pressure for the U.S. to remain in the treaty.
“The INF Treaty has been instrumental to our national security and to the security of our allies in Europe and Asia. Unilateral withdrawal will not bring Russia into compliance, and only opens the door to Russia overtly producing and deploying INF-banned missiles in greater numbers with impunity. Instead of withdrawing from the treaty, the President should work with Congress to strengthen the NATO enhanced forward presence and our assets in Eastern Europe. By pulling out of the treaty, President Trump is goading a nuclear power into a global, unpredictable arms race that will make America and the world less safe.
“The INF Treaty has been a significant source of global security over the past 30 years and should be be preserved and expanded. Rather than haphazardly abandoning the treaty, we must strengthen its provisions through deliberate and tough multilateral diplomacy.”
