Senators Introduce Resolution Recognizing LGBTQ Pride Month Because Trump Won’t

Senators issued the resolution concurrently with a related letter from Democrats in the Armed Services Committee in the U.S. House of Representatives. Organized by Maryland Rep. Anthony Brown, liberal lawmakers demanded to know why the Pentagon is “backing away from supporting and celebrating” LGBTQ service members by refusing to issue its own memo recognizing Pride month. House Armed Services Democrats are blasting the Pentagon for what they charge was a low-key handling of LGBTQ Pride Month. Rep. Anthony Brown and seven other lawmakers wrote a letter to Mattis saying the Pentagon broke precedent by not releasing memos to commemorate the occasion or providing any high-level officials for a building ceremony. Democratic lawmakers demand answers from DHS, HHS secretaries about separated children

A group of Democratic lawmakers from Maryland is demanding answers from Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Alex Azar regarding the Trump administration’s abusive child separation policy, and how it intends to reunite families split up at the U.S.-Mexico border. The letter, sent Thursday and signed by all of Maryland’s Democratic representatives and senators, including Rep. Anthony Brown, Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer, and Sens. Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen, requested more information about the initial separation process, and the most up-to-date figures on how many children have been removed from their parents and placed under DHS or HHS care. It also asked the agencies to provide information about the well-being of those children, and how exactly they plan to locate each child’s family. Read more »

New Bill Seeks to Help Returning Citizens

On May 22, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill, “The Formerly Incarcerated Reenter Society Transformed, Safely Transitioning Every Person Act” (FIRST STEP) by a bipartisan vote, 360-59. The bill was co-sponsored by U.S. Reps. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), a member of the CBC, and Doug Collins (R-Ga.). Jeffries had the support of the majority of the CBC including its chairman, U.S. Rep. Cedric Richmond (D-La.), but some of its House members such as Reps. Anthony Brown (D-Md.) and Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) voted against the bill saying it did nothing to reduce mandatory minimum sentences. Read more »
