Congressman Anthony Brown Advocates for Cameroonian Refugees in ICE Custody

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Anthony G. Brown (MD-04) released the following statement calling on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to immediately halt the deportation of Cameroonian and other African asylum-seekers:

“The American people resoundingly rejected the Trump Administration’s inhumane and cruel immigration policies. I am deeply concerned with a Trump-appointed judge stepping in to hamstring President Biden’s lawful suspension of deportations and reports that ICE may be accelerating the process to remove asylum seekers from this country. This is unacceptable.

“Asylum seekers slated deportation from Cameroon and other African countries fear politically motivated prosecution, violence, retaliation and health consequences. Many of these individuals have been separated from their families and enjoy close ties with family in the United States and would benefit from a more humane alternative to detention as their claims are adjudicated. I continue to demand ICE to immediately halt any and all deportations to Cameroon until the violence in this country has abated and pending legal motions are heard.

“Additionally, I urge the Biden Administration to issue  an immediate 18-month designation of either Temporary Protected Status (TPS) or Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) for Cameroon.”
