Congressman Anthony Brown: A Teen Vaping on the Boardwalk Clearly Isn’t a Threat to Public Safety

“Families shouldn’t have to worry about the safety of their sons and daughters at the hands of law enforcement. Parents of young Black men and women know this fear all too well.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Anthony G. Brown (MD-04) released the following statement regarding a Saturday altercation between Ocean City police and a teenager:

“The actions of Ocean City police over the weekend were unacceptable. Families shouldn’t have to worry about the safety of their sons and daughters at the hands of law enforcement. Parents of young Black men and women know this fear all too well.

“Police must always prioritize deescalation tactics and reserve use of force in only rare instances. A teen vaping on the Boardwalk clearly isn’t a threat to public safety. The videos of the incident show excessive use of force, including tasering an unarmed teenager and kneeing the restrained and prone victim. This kind of reckless behavior harms public trust in law enforcement and demand immediate review and action to ensure incidents like this don’t happen again.”
