Brown, Mfume, Evans and Blunt Rochester Applaud Inclusion of $1 Billion for the Reconnecting Communities Act in Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal

“The funding included in this deal will serve as a starting point in our efforts to build 21st-century infrastructure that serves every American.”

"More must be done. We will continue to strongly advocate for additional funding and measures to promote inclusive infrastructure that reconnects neighborhoods and ensures economic opportunity for all.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Anthony G. Brown (MD-04), Congressman Kweisi Mfume (MD-07), Congressman Dwight Evans (PA-03) and Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester (DE-AL) released the following statement applauding the inclusion of a program to reconnect communities and remove harmful infrastructure barriers within the Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal:

“We applaud Senate inclusion of an initiative to reconnect communities and remove harmful infrastructure barriers within the negotiated Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal. For decades, underserved communities, particularly communities of color, have been unacceptably divided by bad infrastructure policies resulting in diminished economic opportunities and mobility, and greater air pollution and safety hazards. This has been the case in Baltimore, Wilmington, Philadelphia and Black communities throughout our country. It’s time to begin correcting these mistakes of the past.

“The funding included in this deal will serve as a starting point in our efforts to build 21st-century infrastructure that serves every American. More must be done. We will continue to strongly advocate for additional funding and measures to promote inclusive infrastructure that reconnects neighborhoods and ensures economic opportunity for all.”

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal includes a first-ever program to reconnect communities divided by transportation infrastructure. The program will fund planning, design, demolition, and reconstruction of street grids, parks, or other infrastructure through $1 billion of dedicated funding.

Reps. Brown, Mfume Evans and Blunt Rochester introduced the Reconnecting Communities Act in the House. Senators Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Ben Cardin (D-MD), Tom Carper (D-DE), Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Alex Padilla (D-CA) and Chris Coons (D-DE) introduced companion legislation in the Senate.
