Child Tax Credit: Congressman Anthony Brown's Latest Roundtable

Patch

"Children and families are our top priority as we continue our recovery," said Congressman Brown in a press release. "This money will help set America's children up for success and put more money in the pockets of hardworking parents to use for child care, summer programs, school supplies, food, rent, clothes, and other necessities. This is how we help families get back on their feet, fight poverty and truly build back better."

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Anthony Brown recently hosted a roundtable with parents, child care providers and local officials to introduce the Child Tax Credit expansion and how it will impact families of the community.

As part of the American Rescue Plan, millions of American families will start receiving monthly payments from the expanded Child Tax Credit.

About 35 million families received their first payment last Thursday, according to CBS News. The Child Tax Credit is expected to provide nearly $15 billion to families each month.

Congressman Brown represents Maryland's fourth congressional district which makes up portions of Prince George's County and Anne Arundel County.

The federal benefit expects to bring 52,000 children of Maryland families, 8,200 specifically from Congressman Brown's district, out of poverty.

Child Tax Credit Eligibility

Families with children ages 17 and under are eligible for the monthly payments, but there are certain conditions that could impact eligibility.

In order for families to qualify for the Child Tax Credit, the parents' main home must be in the U.S. for more than six months of the year, according to the IRS.

Families with single taxpayers earning less than $75,000 and joint filers earning less than $150,000 will collect $3,600 annually for each child under 6 years old and $3,000 annually for children between the ages of 6 and 17.

Families with incomes above those amounts will have their payments reduced by $50 for every $1,000 of income over the limits. The enhanced payments stop for single taxpayers earning $95,000 and joint filers earning $170,000.

The remaining families that earn above the enhanced payment income requirement will receive the regular Child Tax Credit of $2,000 a year, or $167 a month per child.
The IRS says the monthly payments will be disbursed on these dates:

  • July 15
  • August 13
  • September 15
  • October 15
  • November 15
  • December 15
